Amino Acid profile Amino Acid profile will identify any deficiencies in essential amino acid levels. In our diet, we need several elements - vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acids. Essential amino acids are required from our food - they cannot be manufactured in the body. Non-essential amino acids can be manufactured by the body from other amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks for protein molecules in the body. Proteins are important for several reasons, and are themselves the building blocks for enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and many other important chemical substances in the body. Amino acids are found in protein foods. This includes meat, fish, dairy produce, grains, beans, legumes, and seeds. However, the main source is meat and fish. It is very difficult on a vegetarian diet to obtain the correct amounts of all the essential amino acids required for health. There are three reasons for using amino acid supplements:
The Amino Acid profile will tell us if there are any deficiencies only. It does not tell us if you would benefit from high dosages of amino acids therapeutically - that is, to treat any symptoms. The use of amino acids therapeutically has not been well established or well researched. Thus comparatively little is known about amino acid supplementation compared with vitamin or mineral supplementation. The Amino Acid profile provides a way of detecting whether amino acid supplements could possibly help with the symptoms you are suffering. Key Benefits
Who should have the test?Anyone who has any health problems, or anyone who wants to stay healthy. There is truth in the saying 'you are what you eat' although we would qualify this by saying 'you are what you process and absorb from what you eat.' It should be considered especially in vegetarians, as it is very difficult to obtain the correct balance of all the essential amino acids from vegetarian food. Meat and fish contains all the essential amino acids required, and if there are no digestive problems, such as leaky gut, then it is very unusual for meat-eating people to be deficient, although we are sometimes surprised. It may be particularly useful for anyone with the following:
Improving the amino acid levels (if there are deficiencies) may be an important factor in helping with many of these conditions. Other tests to consider
